About Hidden Garden (Lilong and Lilang)
Hidden Garden — formal name Lilong and Lilang Restaurant — sits four kilometres from Plaza Burgos in the Bulala district of Vigan, accessed by a short tricycle ride from the city centre. The restaurant occupies a converted family home set back behind bamboo fencing and floral archways, with the dining area built into a vast tropical-forest garden plot that the founding family has cultivated since the 1970s. The restaurant has become Vigan's most-recommended single dining destination over the last decade.
The signature dishes are the Vigan-specific Ilocano signatures done in their reference forms. Vigan Empanada (₱85 each) — the crescent-shaped, deep-fried orange-rice-flour-batter shell stuffed with grated green papaya, longganisa sausage, and a whole egg, pressed flat and fried golden-brown in pork lard. Chicken Inasal (₱220 a quarter) — the Bacolod-Visayas-style charcoal-grilled marinated chicken (lemongrass, calamansi, annatto-oil), eaten with rice and vinegar-and-chilies dip. Bagnet (₱320 a portion) — the deep-fried thrice-cooked pork belly that's Ilocos Sur's most-prized meat preparation. A meal of two empanadas, chicken inasal, bagnet, rice, and a calamansi juice for two runs ₱950.
The room is the architectural set-piece — twenty tables arranged across the tropical garden in informal clusters, with mature kalachuchi (frangipani) trees, banana plants, and a small fish-pond at the back. Capacity is one hundred across the garden plus a covered indoor area for rainy-season service. Reservations are taken by phone for groups of six or more; smaller parties walk in. Sunday lunch is the heaviest service of the week.
What makes Hidden Garden the city's most-recommended dining destination is the combination of the recipe authenticity (the Ilocano signatures are made the genuine way, with no shortcuts), the garden setting (the tropical-forest atmosphere is unique to the restaurant), and the family-run service (the founding couple, in their late 80s, still oversee the kitchen daily). For travellers with a single Vigan dinner to spend, this is the answer.
Best Occasion Fit
First dates — the garden setting, the Ilocano-signature menu, and the after-dinner walk back to Calle Crisologo do the work. Birthdays — the multi-dish family-style format scales well for groups of four to eight and the staff will arrange a small song. Team dinners with visiting colleagues — the garden-table layout absorbs eight or twelve without complaint.
