Steirereck

“Austria's first table: three Michelin stars in a Stadtpark glass pavilion. Book the weekday lunch to impress anyone.”
About Steirereck
The Reitbauer family has run Steirereck since 1970, and since 2014 it has cooked inside a mirrored pavilion that seems to float among the plane trees of the Stadtpark. Heinz Reitbauer works the stoves; his wife Birgit runs the floor with the calm of someone who has hosted heads of state and honeymooners in the same hour. When Michelin returned to the whole of Austria in 2025, the inspectors settled a long argument by awarding the house three stars, and the 2026 guide confirmed all three.
The signature is Alpine char cooked at the table in a shell of molten beeswax, basted until the fish carries a faint note of honey and pollen. Around it rolls some of Europe's best trolley theatre: a bread service running to more than twenty varieties, a serious cheese cart, and vegetable courses grown on the family's own Pogusch farm in Styria. Dinner runs six courses for €225 or seven for €245; lunch menus start at €155, and wine pairings run €105 to €120.
The scoreboard is long. Steirereck has appeared on the World's 50 Best list for well over a decade and has been named Austria's best restaurant more times than anyone bothers counting. The daily reality stays practical: tables book directly at steirereck.at, weekday lunch remains a gettable ticket, and the casual Meierei downstairs serves the same farm produce and a famous cheese selection for a fraction of the price.
The Room
A pavilion of mirrored panels and warm wood with tall windows pulling the park into every sightline. Tables are broad, the acoustics stay soft, and the service carts glide constantly without ever crowding a conversation. Dress is smart; the room reads polished rather than formal, and a daylight lunch here feels every bit as grand as dinner.
Why book it, occasion by occasion
Every great room has evenings it serves and evenings it wastes. Steirereck divides cleanly.
For the guest who ranks every city by its best table
Three stars carry the argument before the first course lands, and the setting does the rest: your guest walks through a park, not a hotel lobby, and sits in daylight with greenery on every side. Ask for a window table when you book, order the char in beeswax for the table, and let the bread trolley absorb any lull. A weekday lunch here signals judgment as loudly as any dinner in Europe.
For terms that need a calm, neutral room
Steirereck runs Monday to Friday, which makes it a working restaurant in the best sense: the lunch room is quiet, discreet and full of people doing exactly what you are doing. The six course dinner is generous but ends at a civilised hour, the sommelier can keep the bill dignified with Austrian Riesling, and the walk through the Stadtpark afterwards is the natural place to shake hands.
For a marker year that deserves the national flagship
Book the pavilion for the anniversary itself, not a rain check. Tell the team the occasion; the kitchen marks it quietly and paces the evening so two people can actually talk. The beeswax char arrives with enough ceremony to feel like an event, and finishing with the cheese trolley stretches the night exactly as long as you want it. In spring and autumn, the park at dusk is the closing course.
What to order
The menu moves with the seasons and the family farm, but a few calls hold all year.
- Char in beeswax
The table side signature: Alpine char basted in molten beeswax until it carries honey and pollen. If you order nothing else deliberately, order this.
- Seven courses over six
The €245 menu adds the course where the vegetable garden argues its case, and that argument is why this kitchen holds three stars.
- The bread trolley, once
More than twenty breads will circle repeatedly. Take the famous varieties early, then hold the line; the menu needs the room.
- The Austrian pairing
The cellar's strength is Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from growers the family has poured for decades. The €105 tier is the smart order.

Questions diners ask
Is Steirereck worth it?
Yes, and it is the definitive Austrian meal. Three Michelin stars since Michelin's 2025 return to Austria, a World's 50 Best pedigree and dinner at €225 to €245 put it level with Europe's flagships while costing less than most of them. The weekday lunch from €155 is one of the continent's fairest three star tickets.
How hard is it to book Steirereck?
Manageable with planning. Reservations run directly through steirereck.at, and prime dinner slots go several weeks out, faster in December and during fair weeks. Weekday lunch is meaningfully easier and often bookable days ahead. The house closes Saturday and Sunday, so aim midweek and check for returned tables in the morning.
What is the dress code at Steirereck?
Smart, without a jacket rule. The daylight pavilion reads polished rather than starched, so most guests wear jackets at dinner and sharp knits at lunch. Trainers and shorts will feel wrong against the trolley service. For the beeswax char you want sleeves you can push back.
What does a meal at Steirereck cost?
Dinner is €225 for six courses or €245 for seven before drinks, with pairings at €105 to €120. Lunch runs €155 to €175. With an aperitif and pairing, plan on €350 to €450 a head at dinner and roughly €250 at lunch. The Meierei downstairs costs far less.
