The Room
Published on Main opened in 2018 on Main Street in Mt Pleasant. Gus Stieffenhofer-Brandson came to the project from his apprentice years at Hawksworth and a stint at Restaurant André in Singapore; the room is his answer to what a chef-driven Vancouver tasting menu should look like. The dining room seats 36 across the main floor and a small chef's counter; the booking window opens six to eight weeks ahead.
Service is small-team and floor-warm. Stieffenhofer-Brandson is in the kitchen every service. The Michelin star arrived in 2022 and has been retained; North America's 50 Best ranked the room #28 in 2024 — the highest-ranked Canadian restaurant on the list.
The Food
The eight-course tasting at $185 rotates seasonally and pulls from a Manitoba-and-BC ingredient bench: Stieffenhofer-Brandson's prairie heritage means a serious focus on Lake Winnipeg whitefish, prairie pulses and grains, and Manitoba honey alongside the standard BC Pacific Coast pantry. The pairing menu at $135 is the right way in.
Wine programme is BC-natural-French with serious depth. Cocktails before the meal at the small front bar.
Best Occasion Fit
First Date: Published on Main's small dining room is the Vancouver first-date for the diner who wants the night to register as world-class. The set tasting is shareable in spirit; the wine pairings are the conversation.
Impress Clients: International visitors recognise the North America's 50 Best ranking without translation. The eight-course tasting is the meal that frames Vancouver correctly.
Birthday: Published on Main handles birthdays with quiet discretion — a candle on the dessert, a signed menu, the captain's acknowledgement.
