About To Rom og Kjøkken

To Rom og Kjøkken — 'Two Rooms and a Kitchen' — opened in 2008 and has been one of the most steadily beloved restaurants in Trondheim ever since. The room is exactly what the name suggests: two warm dining rooms and an open kitchen, with timber walls, candlelight, and a regular crowd that has been eating there for fifteen years.

The cooking is modern Nordic in the bistro register — less precise than Fagn or Credo, more generous than either, and considerably more affordable. A short menu of starters, mains and desserts, plus a daily-changing tasting that runs about half the price of the Michelin alternatives. Mountain trout, reindeer, foraged mushrooms, root vegetables in winter and herbs all summer.

The wine list is short and intelligent, with a focus on natural producers from Burgundy, Austria and Italy. The sommelier is one of the most generous palates in Trondheim, and recommendations are honest rather than upselling.

For a first date that needs to be impressive without being intimidating, an anniversary that wants warmth rather than ceremony, or simply a Tuesday-night dinner that earns its keep, To Rom og Kjøkken is the answer locals quietly recommend first.

Why It Works for First Date

The candlelit room and the generous, share-friendly cooking keep the evening warm and conversational. The price level is fair enough to keep the stakes manageable, but the cooking is interesting enough to give the evening real character.
