Yeonpo Galbi

The smaller, more local Suwon galbi institution — half the price of Bonsuwon, walking distance from Hwaseong Fortress, beloved for the galbi-soup dish that Bonsuwon doesn't make.

About Yeonpo Galbi

Yeonpo Galbi (연포갈비) is the smaller, more-local of Suwon's three iconic galbi institutions — operating from this Gyeongsudae-ro address since 1978, the kitchen has built a reputation among Suwon residents for the genuine local BBQ experience and the signature galbi-tang (galbi soup) that the larger Bonsuwon doesn't make. The room is a third the size of Bonsuwon and the prices are noticeably lower; this is where Suwon-resident BBQ enthusiasts actually eat.

The signature is the Standard Galbi Set at ₩28,000 per person — 200g of marinated beef short ribs grilled tableside (the classic Suwon style, with the marinade slightly less sweet than Bonsuwon's), served with rice, doenjang-jjigae, twelve banchan small dishes, and lettuce wraps. The premium Galbi-Tang Set adds the kitchen's signature galbi soup (a clear beef-bone broth with shredded short-rib meat, scallion, and a small portion of glass noodles) for ₩32,000. The galbi-tang lunch set without the BBQ runs ₩15,000 and is one of Suwon's underpriced lunch experiences.

The room is smaller and more intimate — ninety seats across a single open dining hall plus a small back-yard terrace open in summer. Walk-ins outside Friday-Saturday peaks always work; reservations are not required. English menus are present but more basic than at Bonsuwon; the staff speak limited but functional English and the picture-led format makes ordering trivial.

What makes Yeonpo worth the visit for travellers who've already eaten Bonsuwon is the contrast — the slightly less-sweet marinade, the bone-broth galbi-tang signature, the smaller-restaurant intimacy. Most local food press will recommend doing both in one Suwon trip; the rooms are seven minutes' walk apart. Cards are accepted; the kitchen is open until 10:30pm.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo dining at the smaller Suwon galbi reference — single-portion BBQ at the counter or the back-yard terrace, ₩28,000 bill, the proper local format. For first dates with someone who's already done Bonsuwon, the comparison gives the meal a built-in conversation. Team dinners up to six work in the back tables; the back-yard terrace absorbs eight in summer evenings.
