About Swiss Hotel

The Swiss Hotel has stood on Sonoma's plaza since the building went up in 1850 for the brother of General Mariano Vallejo, and the Marioni family has run it since 1935. Four generations later, Hank Marioni keeps the bar virtually unchanged and the kitchen turning out Italian comfort food: house butternut squash ravioli, eggplant parmesan, wood-fired pizza. The room is California Historic Landmark No. 496. Dinner runs around $30 to $55 a head, and the Glarifee, a cold Irish-coffee cocktail invented here in 1965, is the drink to end on.

The Kitchen

The Swiss Hotel has never been about reinvention. Hank Marioni is the fourth generation of his family behind the bar, and the menu reads like a Wine Country trattoria that knows exactly what it is: modern takes on Italian classics built on Sonoma produce. The house butternut squash ravioli is the dish regulars return for, sweet and brown-buttered; the eggplant parmesan and the penne with sausage are old reliables; the wood-fired pizzas come blistered from the oven. There are Swiss-Italian holdovers too, polenta, robust meatballs and a chophouse wedge, plus a seafood pappardelle for the table that wants something richer. The bar is its own institution: Ted Dunlap mixed the first Glarifee, a cold Irish-coffee cocktail, here in 1965, and the walls carry a photographic history of the town and its visitors. The Room

Two rooms and a heated patio, all of it worn-in and warm. The front bar is dim and clubby, its walls papered with decades of town photographs; the dining room is brighter, with white cloths and dark wood; the back patio, strung with light, is the seat to request in summer. Sound stays conversational even when the bar is busy. Tables are comfortably spaced, the dress code is Sonoma smart-casual, and the whole place seats roughly a hundred across the rooms and the patio.
