The Verdict

Toc Toc opened on Apgujeong-ro 60-gil in Cheongdam-dong in 2014. Chef Hyun-Seok Choi — known professionally as Chae Hyun-Seok — trained at Joel Robuchon's Atelier in Paris and at Pierre Gagnaire's Rue Balzac flagship before returning to Korea to open his own restaurant. The Michelin Guide awarded a star in 2017 and Toc Toc has held it every year since. The room is small, deliberately understated, and centred on the open kitchen counter where Chae himself plates many courses.

The cuisine is modern French built on the techniques Chae absorbed at two of Paris's most rigorous kitchens, but the produce is increasingly Korean. Chae has spent a decade developing relationships with specific Korean farmers and fishermen — the seafood is from the East Sea coast, the vegetables are from Yangpyeong, the herbs are from Chae's own kitchen garden. The signature dishes include a French-technique gyoza filled with slow-braised Korean pork, a langoustine course finished with a sauce built on Korean fermented chilli, and a textbook Bresse pigeon with a Korean ginseng reduction.

The wine list is short, intelligent, and built around Burgundy and Loire producers Chae has known for years. The cocktail programme uses Korean spirits with serious technique. From ₩140,000 the value is exceptional for a Michelin-starred kitchen of this calibre — Toc Toc is one of the most defensibly priced fine-dining experiences in Seoul. The lunch tasting is among the smartest mid-day offers in the city.

Why It Works for First Date

Toc Toc is one of Seoul's great first-date restaurants — the room is intimate without being formal, the cuisine is sophisticated enough to give the conversation immediate substance, and the price is defensible enough that the meal does not become a statement. For a birthday with a small group, the kitchen will coordinate quiet celebrations gracefully. For solo dining at the counter, Chae himself often talks counter guests through each course.
