The Room
Carla Leonardi opened Cafe Lago in 1990 — a small Italian neighbourhood-restaurant in Madison Park dedicated to the proposition that the cooking of her Italian-American family deserved a serious full-service expression. Thirty-five years later the room is one of Seattle's longest-running family-Italian institutions and the standard against which the city's neighbourhood-Italian tradition is measured.
The Seattle Times Hall of Fame entry recognises Cafe Lago as one of the city's most-enduring fine-dining institutions. The Leonardi family is still on the floor.
The Food
The hand-rolled lasagna is the menu's calling card — fourteen layers, slow-cooked overnight, served family-style. The wood-fired pizza programme runs four rotating pies. The seasonal-rotating Italian secondi and the antipasti programme handle the menu's wider draws.
Wine programme runs Italian-classic. Cocktails are aperitivi-led. Service is the family-restaurant register Cafe Lago has run for over three decades.
Best Occasion Fit
Birthday: Birthdays at Cafe Lago are warm, lasagna-led, neighbourhood-Italian affairs the Leonardi family has hosted for thirty-five years.
First Date: The bar at Cafe Lago is one of Madison Park's most-enduring first-date seats.
Team Dinner: The back of the dining room handles tables of eight to twelve. The family-style lasagna programme is the icebreaker.
