The Room
Starlite opened on India Street in Mission Hills in 2007 — a concrete-and-metal architectural box with a wood-and-leather warm interior, an open kitchen, and a small front bar that has been one of San Diego's most-cited cocktail destinations since opening. The room seats 90 across the main floor and the bar; the booking window is one week.
Service is small-team and floor-warm.
The Food
The kitchen runs contemporary American with a strong vegetable focus — California Mediterranean pulls (the burrata, the crispy Brussels sprouts, the seasonal pasta), a wood-grilled meat side (lamb chops, prime hanger steak), and a brunch that converts every first-time diner. The cocktail programme is the bar's anchor — the Starlite Mule mug is the original; many other San Diego bars have copied it.
Best Occasion Fit
First Date: Starlite's bar is the Mission Hills first-date for the diner who wants the night to register as San Diego-cocktail-knowledgeable.
Birthday: Birthdays at Starlite are warm-and-low-lit — the cocktail programme is the photograph; the kitchen sends out a small dessert with a candle.
