About La Couronne

La Couronne has operated on the Place du Vieux-Marche — the square where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431 — since 1345, making it the self-declared oldest inn in France. The building's half-timbered facade is among Rouen's most photographed and the dining rooms inside preserve their 14th-19th century layouts with the Norman wood-beamed ceilings intact.

The restaurant's international profile was fixed by Julia Child, who ate her first French meal here in November 1948 (sole meuniere) — a dinner she described in 'My Life in France' as the experience that set her on her culinary path. The kitchen still serves sole meuniere as its signature, alongside the traditional Norman canon: duckling a la presse (Rouen's own preparation), coquilles Saint-Jacques, Camembert rotis, and the rich cream-and-apple preparations the region is known for.

The dining rooms are arranged across multiple floors and decorated in the classical-Norman style — timbered ceilings, patterned wallpaper, heavy curtains, and portrait paintings of the restaurant's historical figures. The atmosphere is old-France rather than contemporary-polished and the service matches: formal, patient, and organised around the classical three-course structure rather than the modern tasting menu.

For birthdays, the historic setting does most of the work — eating in a restaurant continuously operating since the 14th century is its own form of occasion-making. The staff handle cake presentations in the traditional style and will arrange window-table seating overlooking the Old Market Square with notice.

Best Occasion Fit

Birthday dinners at La Couronne work on the historical register — the age of the building, the Julia Child connection, and the Joan of Arc square outside all contribute to an evening that feels significant by its setting alone. The classical Norman kitchen delivers on the expectation without trying to modernise something that is better for not having been modernised.
