The 19th-century aristocratic mansion on Avenida de Montevideu sits at the precise geographical moment where the Douro River releases itself into the Atlantic Ocean — the Foz do Douro, the mouth of the river that has defined Porto's commerce, culture, and character for a thousand years. Chef Arnaldo Azevedo understood from the outset that this location was not merely an address but a manifesto, and his cooking responds to it with complete sincerity: menus built on the rhythm of the tides, the Atlantic catch, and the seasonal produce of the river's long valley.

The mansion itself, now home to the Vila Foz Hotel & Spa, was renovated to preserve the grandeur of its 19th-century proportions while installing a contemporary dining room that uses the building's generous windows to frame the landscape. The restaurant occupies what was once the house's ballroom, with ceiling heights that allow the room to breathe without becoming cavernous, and with enough natural light in the early evening — the golden hour before Porto's dramatic Atlantic sunsets — to make pre-dinner aperitifs by the windows an experience that competes with the kitchen's opening courses for attention.

Azevedo offers two tasting menus: Novo Mundo, an entirely vegetarian progression that is one of the most serious plant-based menus in Portugal, and Maresia — the Portuguese word for the smell of the sea — which follows the Atlantic harvest with disciplined attention to what is swimming and what is growing closest to the coast that week. The Maresia menu is the primary expression of his cooking philosophy: fish treated with the reverence that others reserve for meat, shellfish as central rather than supporting players, and vegetables from small producers in the Minho and Douro valley used as full-flavour counterweights to the ocean's brininess.

The Kitchen Seat — a counter reservation for exactly two diners in direct view of the kitchen's operations — is the most intense version of the Vila Foz experience. Reserved exclusively for pairs, it offers constant interaction with the chef and an unrepeatable sense of culinary intimacy. This is particularly relevant for proposals and significant anniversaries: the combination of extraordinary setting, personalised attention, and food that arrives as a continuous conversation makes the Kitchen Seat one of Porto's most memorable evening formats.

Expect to spend €140–160 per person for the Maresia menu with wine pairing, rising to €180 for the Kitchen Seat experience. Reserve four to six weeks ahead for the main dining room; the Kitchen Seat requires more advance planning and should be booked as soon as a date is confirmed.
