About Flow

Flow opened in 2015 in a restored neo-Arab building on the Rua da Conceicao, in the centre of Porto's Baixa district — a former ceramics factory and showroom turned into a three-part room of restaurant, bar and rooftop terrace. It trades on setting and a wide-ranging Mediterranean menu rather than a single chef's signature, and it has become one of the more reliable stylish tables in the downtown grid.

The Kitchen

The kitchen works the Mediterranean with Portuguese roots and the odd Italian or Japanese touch. Expect fresh fish, risottos and house gnocchi alongside Portuguese plates and a few creative combinations, with a bar list that runs from cocktails to Douro wine. It is generous, crowd-pleasing cooking aimed at a long, sociable dinner. A full meal with wine lands at around €50 per person, which puts it in the upper-mid bracket for the Baixa.

The Room

The building does much of the work: tiled and arched neo-Arab detailing, warm lighting and three distinct spaces, with a rooftop terrace that comes into its own on warm evenings. It runs lively and social rather than hushed, with the bar busy at the start of the night. Service is friendly and used to a mixed room of locals and visitors. Book ahead for the terrace and for weekend dinner, when the downtown fills fast.

Best for a first date

For a first date, a birthday with friends or a relaxed client dinner in the centre, Flow is an easy yes: the restored room, the sharing-friendly menu and the terrace set the mood. A natural first-date and birthday table, and a comfortable impress-clients booking in the Baixa.

Not for

Not for anyone after a hushed fine-dining hush or a tight budget — Flow is a busy, social downtown room where the building and the terrace, not silence, are the draw.
