About Street & Co.

Street & Co. has occupied a brick-and-timber room on cobblestoned, pedestrian-only Wharf Street, tucked between Commercial and Fore in the Old Port, since Dana Street opened it in 1989. More than three decades on it remains the seafood benchmark in our Portland, Maine guide and on the city's seafood map.

It is the room locals send visitors to and then quietly resent for being so hard to book - an all-seafood, Mediterranean-leaning kitchen that has never needed to chase a trend.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is all seafood, cooked Mediterranean-style in well-worn copper skillets at open stations along the room. The clams in white sauce over linguine have been on the menu since opening night in 1989; so has the sole francaise, a fillet floured and egg-washed, seared in butter and finished with potatoes that soak up the nutty brown butter. The lobster diavolo - a butter-and-garlic lobster pasta over linguine - has been called Maine's best pasta dish, and the mussels provencal in garlic, white wine and butter show the same restraint. Fish comes from local purveyors, fishermen and organic farms.

Little has changed because little needs to - this is consistency held over thirty-five years rather than reinvention.

The Room

The room is snug and atmospheric: exposed brick, timber beams, copper skillets hanging over the open kitchens, and tables close enough to feel the buzz. The cobblestone of Wharf Street outside and the candle-warm light inside make it one of Portland's most romantic seats, for all that it is unfussy.

It is small and consistently full, so a reservation well ahead is close to essential, especially in summer.

Best for an anniversary or special dinner

Street & Co. suits an anniversary, a romantic first date, or a milestone birthday in the Old Port. For other Portland tables, compare Fore Street, Eventide Oyster Co. or Scales.

Not for

Not for a big group or anyone wanting anything beyond seafood - it is a small, often-packed room with tight tables and an all-seafood menu, and it does not bend for meat-eaters.
