About Chez Francis

Chez Francis occupies a colonial mansion on Rue Romain Rolland, the quiet grid of White Town where Pondicherry keeps its French-quarter heritage. The building dates to the 1760s, when the town was rebuilt; the restaurant as it runs today opened in 2000 as part of the small Dune de L'Orient hotel. It is one of the most atmospheric addresses in our Pondicherry guide and a standout on the town's French map.

It is the room visitors come to for the Pondicherry that the postcards promise - candlelight, high ceilings and a courtyard under the stars.

The Kitchen

The kitchen cooks the rare Franco-Tamil hybrid that only Pondicherry produces: authentic French gourmet plates alongside Pondicherry Creole cooking and a thread of South Indian technique. The signature Creole prawn curry is the dish locals and visitors send each other for - deep, spiced and built on the day's catch. Around it sit grilled seafood like sutta era, fresh pomfret and tiger prawns, and curiosities such as vazhapoo vada, a fritter made from banana flower. Seafood is the strength, the platters generous.

It is heritage cooking with a real point of view, the colonial and the Tamil sitting on the same plate rather than fighting over it.

The Room

The setting is the draw: vintage French-style interiors under high colonial ceilings, and a candlelit courtyard that turns a dinner into an occasion. The lighting is low and warm, the spacing generous, the mood unhurried and romantic - closer to a private mansion than a restaurant floor.

The courtyard tables fill in the cooler season and at weekends, so reserve ahead when you can.

Best for a romantic dinner or anniversary

Chez Francis suits a romantic anniversary, an unhurried first date, or a memorable birthday in White Town. For other Pondicherry tables, compare Le Dupleix and Coromandel Cafe.

Not for

Not for a quick casual meal or strict French-only purists - this is a heritage courtyard restaurant where the cooking blends French, Creole and South Indian, and the setting sets the pace.
