Zsolnay Restaurant

The Zsolnay family transformed Pécs in the 19th century. Their porcelain factory — famous for the eosin-glazed tiles that decorate the Hungarian Parliament and countless other landmark buildings — is now a cultural quarter that UNESCO recognises, tourists seek out, and locals are quietly proud of. The restaurant inside it operates with an awareness of this heritage that never tips into cliché.

The space is extraordinary. Original factory buildings have been converted into airy dining rooms where the Zsolnay tile work appears everywhere — on floors, on decorative panels, in the ceramic tableware used for service. Eating here is an education in what the family achieved, served alongside food that does justice to the setting.

The kitchen applies modern Hungarian technique to seasonal southern Hungarian produce. A signature starter of smoked paprika soup with sour cream foam and house-baked lángos croutons demonstrates the balance being struck: recognisably Hungarian, technically confident, genuinely delicious. The main courses favour comfort over provocation — braised dishes, slowly rendered meats, the kind of food that makes sense when eaten in a building of this age and significance.

The wine list emphasises Villány and Eger, Hungary's two most celebrated red wine regions. The dessert selection includes a Zsolnay-branded chocolate box that arrives with coffee and is available to purchase — a souvenir that avoids all the usual objections to restaurant merchandise.
