The wine cave that whispers. Forty Hungarian labels, ten small plates, zero pretence.

Susgó — the name means 'whisper' in Hungarian — is precisely what it sounds like: a wine bar where the atmosphere encourages conspiratorial intimacy. The basement location gives it a cave-like quality; exposed stone, low vaulted ceilings, the kind of lighting that makes everyone look better and conversation flow more freely.

The wine list is the point here. Forty Hungarian labels spanning the major wine regions — Villány, Eger, Tokaj, Badacsony, Szekszárd — and curated with the intelligence of someone who travels to the source. The Villány selections include multiple producers and vintages of Cabernet Franc and Blaufränkisch; the Tokaj section balances the famous Aszú dessert wines with increasingly impressive dry Furmints that are changing international perceptions of the region. The staff can speak to all of it.

The small plates menu is designed to accompany wine rather than compete with it. Charcuterie from local producers — Mangalitza lardo, smoked goose breast, paprika salami from nearby Tolna — arrive on boards with house-pickled vegetables and dense bread from a nearby bakery. There are cooked dishes too: stuffed mushrooms with herbed cheese, duck liver pâté with quince gel, a slow-cooked pork terrine with pickled peppers. Nothing is trying to be a restaurant main course. Everything is trying to be excellent.

Best for: Solo Dining

Susgó is where eating alone is not only acceptable but actively ideal. The bar seating allows you to engage with the sommelier, work through the wine list systematically, and enjoy small plates at your own pace. The intimate scale means you will overhear interesting conversations; the wine will ensure you join one.
