About Entre Nous French Bistro

Entre Nous French Bistro opened on Green Street in 2018. Its co-owners, Mathias and JC, both grew up on the French Riviera, and the menu they have built in Pasadena reads less like a tribute to bistro cuisine than a straightforward importation of it. Escargots de Bourgogne come to the table in the shells, the butter as aggressive as it should be, the parsley finely cut rather than chopped. Filet mignon à la Bordelaise arrives with the wine reduction cooked down to the point where it lacquers rather than sauces. The confit de canard — which readers of the local press have variously described as the best in Los Angeles County — comes with the skin crisped to glass and the leg meat still yielding underneath. Île flottante, for those who stay for dessert, is made with real vanilla and a proper crème anglaise.

The room is small, which is part of the point. Dim lighting, Provence-inspired decor that doesn't tip into kitsch, soft music chosen by someone with functioning taste rather than an algorithm. The walls are warm. The ceiling is low. The tables are close enough that the restaurant feels full at sixty percent capacity — which is how a bistro is supposed to feel. There is no attempt at photogenic design for social media, and as a result Entre Nous occupies a specific niche in Pasadena's dining scene: the restaurant residents recommend to out-of-town visitors when they are trying to impress without performing.

The wine list is where Mathias and JC have done their most distinctive work. Burgundy is represented seriously, which is rare at this price point anywhere in California. The glass pours rotate. The list rewards the guest who is willing to ask. The bar programme is small but correct — the kir royale is made the proper way, the pastis is poured to the line rather than to a short measure, and the after-dinner digestifs include a calvados that justifies itself.

Where Entre Nous lands on price is worth noting. Dinner runs roughly $50 to $100 per person excluding wine, which positions it below Perle and The Raymond but above the neighbourhood bistros on Colorado Boulevard. The cooking is firmly in the upper register of that price band; one comes away feeling the meal was fairly priced rather than merely acceptable, which is the test. Portions are honest. The steak frites is a full plate. The bread arrives warm, and a second basket arrives without being asked.

Who it is for: anyone who has been to Paris, anyone who has not been to Paris and would like an approximate idea of why people come back wanting to move there, and anyone who prefers a quiet table, a real wine list, and service that treats the guest as someone who has walked into a neighbourhood restaurant rather than a destination. Entre Nous is not trying to be more than that. It does not need to be.

Why Entre Nous French Bistro is Perfect for a First Date

A first date in Pasadena has three good options and seven acceptable ones. Entre Nous is on the list of the three. The room is intimate but not so small that conversation feels exposed. The menu is classical enough that neither party has to explain a dish, and familiar enough that ordering does not require a negotiation. The price point is fair without being cheap — which matters on a first date — and the pacing allows for the evening to run long if the evening wants to. Most importantly, the service is warm. The owners are in the room on most nights. That confers a quiet reassurance that makes the evening easier.
