The Pelican has been feeding Paphos diners for longer than most restaurants in Cyprus have existed. Its position on the working harbour — fishing boats moored forty feet from your table — is not a marketing decision; it is simply where it has always been, and where it works. The building is unremarkable. The view is not.

The menu is built around what the morning brought in: grilled octopus that has been sun-dried before charcoaling; fresh sea bream and sea bass roasted whole with lemon, capers, and olive oil; calamari rings fried with a lightness that suggests the fryer temperature has been calibrated over many years. The fish soup — a deep, saffron-tinted broth with chunky white fish and sourdough on the side — is Paphos comfort food at its most concentrated.

The Pelican doesn't try to be Minthis Hills.
