About Hotel Raya
Hotel Raya is the institutional luxury anchor of Panarea — opened in 1960 by Myriam Tilche, currently in second-generation ownership under her daughter Eleonora, and the most architecturally significant chalet hotel in the Aeolian Islands. The hotel sits on the Punta Milazzese — the southernmost cliff of the island, directly facing the Stromboli volcano twenty-two kilometres east. The dining room and terrace are built into a series of whitewashed Aeolian-style stone-and-stucco pavilions stepping down the cliff face.
The cuisine is contemporary Mediterranean steakhouse with a strong Aeolian-Sicilian seafood programme. The restaurant is the only steakhouse in the Aeolian Islands and won the 2021 'Best Steak in Italy' award (Braciamancora) for its Spanish-Wagyu programme. Signatures include a wood-fired Spanish A5 Wagyu chop with Aeolian capers and Sicilian-pistachio crumb; a hand-rolled busiate alla trapanese with Mazzara red prawn; a slow-cooked Mediterranean octopus with green olive and lemon confit; a wood-fired Adriatic dentice with Aeolian-island salt; the famous 'tartare di gambero rosso' — Mazzara red-prawn tartare with green olive.
The wine list runs to 600 references with deep Sicilian smallholder coverage — Etna DOC, Pantelleria Passito, Lipari Malvasia (the protected-AOP Aeolian sweet wine) — and a respectable Italian-national section. Glass pours start at €8 and the by-the-glass programme runs a generous Aeolian-volcanic flight.
The dining room and cliff-side terrace together hold a hundred and twenty covers — sixty in the indoor whitewashed pavilions, sixty on the cliff-side terrace facing Stromboli. The terrace is the experience: the most photographed sunset dining setting in the Aeolian Islands, with the Stromboli volcano erupting in real time visible across the water from approximately 19:30 onward in summer.
Why It's Perfect for Proposal
Hotel Raya is the proposal-grade table in the Aeolian Islands — the cliff-side terrace at sunset with the Stromboli volcano erupting in real time across the water is among the most photographed dinner settings in continental Europe, the Hotel Raya pedigree settles the institutional question, and the cooking's mid-tier register makes a multi-course dinner accessible. Brief Eleonora three days ahead and ask for a corner two-top at the western edge of the cliff terrace.
