About Kaneo

Kaneo began in 1993 as a family-run restaurant on the shore of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest lakes, in the little settlement of St John at Kaneo. It sits directly below the famous Church of St John — the most photographed view in North Macedonia — with a terrace built out almost over the water and the lake stretching away in front of every table.

It is one of Ohrid's most loved tables. Compare the lakeside Belvedere, the Biljanini Izvori and Alexandrija, or browse the wider seafood picks.

The Kitchen

The kitchen leans on seasonal local ingredients with a clear focus on Lake Ohrid fish. Trout is the headline, prepared several ways — the signature Trout in Prison, baked with aromatic herbs, and homemade pasta tossed with trout — alongside fish stew, salads of local produce and homemade desserts. It is honest, regional cooking built around the catch rather than fine-dining flourish.

It is fair value for the setting: a trout main with starters runs roughly €15 to 30 a head before wine, with a wide list of Macedonian wines to pair.

The Room

The setting is the whole point. Indoor and terraced seating step down to the water, with panoramic views of the lake and the Kaneo church above. The mood is quiet and intimate, made for a long lunch in the sun or a romantic evening as the light goes off the lake. Reach it on foot along the lakeside path or by boat; there is no road right to the door, which is part of the charm.

Best for a romantic lakeside lunch or dinner in Ohrid

Kaneo suits a romantic occasion — the lakeside terrace and church view make it one of Ohrid's most beautiful spots for an anniversary, a proposal or a memorable first date over trout and Macedonian wine. For more of the town's tables, see Belvedere or browse the full Ohrid dining guide.

Not for

Not for diners who need easy car access or want a fast, formal city dinner — Kaneo is a lakeside family terrace reached on foot or by boat, built around the view and the trout.
