About Grand Hotel Veranda High Tea

The Grand Hotel is a resplendent colonial-style mountain retreat in the hill-country town of Nuwara Eliya, built in 1891 as the palatial residence of former Governor of Sri Lanka, Sir Edward Barnes. The hotel features three restaurants, a bar, and coffee shop among its amenities, with the Grand Veranda being the most-visited single dining destination — the hotel's colonial-style verandah-and-glass-room dining hall that runs as the country's reference high-tea service.

The signature is the Grand High Tea ($25 per person, available daily 3-6pm) — the proper colonial high-tea format with hot pots of single-estate Ceylon teas (the Pedro Estate Pekoe, the Mackwoods Orange Pekoe, the Glenloch Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings, the Liebrook BOPF, plus seasonal estate selections), crustless tea-sandwiches in five varieties (egg-and-watercress, cucumber, smoked-salmon, chicken-mayonnaise, ham), warm scones with strawberry preserves and clotted cream, and a hot-savoury selection (mini quiches, sausage rolls, cheese-and-onion straws). The premium Royal High Tea ($40) adds champagne service and additional savoury courses.

The room is the architectural set-piece. The Grand Veranda has been preserved with the original 1891 colonial decoration — high ceilings, wood-paneled walls, antique brass-and-glass fittings, period chandeliers, and the famous wraparound verandah windows that face the hotel's English-style formal gardens with the central highlands mountains visible in the distance. Capacity is sixty across the verandah plus thirty in the adjoining glass conservatory used during rainy weather.

Reservations matter — the High Tea service books at least one day ahead, ideally a week during the December-February high-tourist peak when European visitors come to Sri Lanka. The hotel concierge will arrange flowers, a private cake, and the post-tea Victoria Park walk transfer with one phone call. The staff speak strong English and Tamil; the menu is in English with brief tea-estate provenance notes.

Best Occasion Fit

Birthdays — the High Tea format is properly celebratory, with the multi-tier scone-and-sandwich tray and the single-estate tea selection giving a built-in special-occasion atmosphere. For impressing visiting international clients with a serious cultural set-piece tea, the 1891 colonial-mansion setting flatters the guest in a way few other Sri Lankan venues match. As a first date the verandah view of the formal gardens at 4pm sunlight is one of the country's most romantic afternoon dining backdrops.
