About Himalaya SoNo

Himalaya SoNo opened on Washington Street in 2024 and within eighteen months had been crowned Connecticut Magazine's Top New Restaurant of 2026 — an unprecedented vote of confidence for a kitchen that draws from Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and northern India rather than the more familiar regional Indian playbook. The room is small and warm, lined with carved wooden screens and lit low, with a long communal table at the back that seats parties of ten or more.

The cooking is what won the vote. Momos are pleated by hand, steamed to a translucent finish, and arrive with the kind of fiery red achar that marks them as authentic. The Bhutanese ema datshi — chili-and-cheese stew — is unapologetically spicy and one of the most distinctive dishes in Fairfield County. Goat curries are slow-braised on the bone; tandoori preparations stay genuinely smoky rather than dialed-back; and the entire menu is built so that vegan, gluten-free, and halal diners can order anything they want without modification. That kind of inclusivity is rare anywhere, let alone in suburban Connecticut.

Live traditional music four nights a week (Thursday through Sunday at 6:30 pm) gives the room a soundtrack you won't find anywhere else in the state, and turns a midweek dinner into a small cultural event. Service is genuine and unhurried — the family that runs the place greets regulars by name and walks first-timers through the menu without condescension. For a solo diner at the bar, a couple on an early date, or a team looking for somewhere genuinely different from the steakhouse-and-Italian rotation, Himalaya SoNo is the most quietly impressive restaurant in Norwalk right now.

Why It Works for Solo Dining

The bar at Himalaya SoNo is one of the few rooms in Fairfield County designed with the solo diner in mind. The seats face the open kitchen, the staff knows how to feed someone eating alone without making them feel like an afterthought, and the vegetable-forward menu is built for the kind of slow, multi-course graze that turns a Tuesday dinner into something to remember. The live music nights add a layer of company without forcing conversation — you can sit, eat, listen, and leave feeling like you've genuinely been somewhere. Few restaurants of this price tier offer that.
