Chef David Standridge — whose Shipwright's Daughter is considered one of the finest restaurants in New England — built Fish Camp as an intentional contrast: everything that the fine-dining flagship isn't, while maintaining the same fanatical commitment to sourcing and quality.
The conceit is summer camp, and it works. The branding leans into 1970s outdoor-education nostalgia — tube socks, camp logos, communal picnic tables — but the food is anything but nostalgic. Every fish served was caught within 10 miles of the restaurant by fishermen known by name. The Poor Man's Lobster Roll uses monkfish — sustainably harvested invasive species from local waters — because monkfish feeds on similar prey to lobster and delivers a comparable richness at a fraction of the price. The Mermaid Fries (hand-cut, double-cooked) have won Connecticut's top ranking in their category. The fish and chips use whatever came in that morning, battered and fried without fanfare and served in a basket with a side of proper tartare.
The location at 4 East Main Street places Fish Camp directly in the flow of Mystic's foot traffic, a few steps from the Bascule Bridge. The format is counter-service with indoor seating and window seats overlooking the street; the mood is unhurried and genuinely family-friendly without descending into the forced cheerfulness that characterises corporate casual dining.
