About Basil's Bar

Basil's Bar has been the cultural heartbeat of Mustique for nearly fifty years — opened in 1976 by Basil Charles (a St-Vincent-born hotelier who arrived on Mustique in the early 1970s) on Britannia Bay, the island's southwestern beach quarter — and is the institutional luxury Caribbean beachfront-bar experience. The bar was redesigned in 2017 by Philippe Starck (the celebrated French designer) but retained its laidback beach-bar character. Lunches overlooking the sea, sunset beers, or cocktails between dances at Jump Up — the canonical Wednesday-night party that has run weekly since the 1970s.

The cuisine is contemporary Caribbean. Signatures include a Caribbean-lobster salad; a slow-cooked Caribbean goat curry with West-Indian spices; a wood-fired Caribbean snapper with samphire; a hand-cut Caribbean tuna tartare with passionfruit; the famous 'rum cake' for the dessert course.

The bar holds one of the largest collections of native Caribbean rums in the region — 200-plus bottlings across the West Indies. The cocktail menu is genuinely innovative; an impressive range of cigars completes the after-dinner programme.

The dining room and Britannia Bay terrace together hold ninety-six covers. Wednesday night is the famous Jump Up — dinner from 6pm and the Splash band performing from 21:30. Service is family-run.

Why It's Perfect for Birthday

Basil's Bar is the birthday-night room in Mustique — the fifty-year institutional history is the conversation, the Britannia Bay beach setting is the canonical Caribbean-luxury experience, and the Wednesday-night Jump Up is one of the great recurring social events anywhere in the Caribbean. Book Wednesday evening for the Jump Up.
