About Kura
Kura is housed in a black-walled meiji-period storehouse in central Matsumoto, two streets back from the Parco department store. The building is registered as a tangible cultural property; the restaurant has been there since 1985, and the kitchen has stayed under the same family management since.
The menu is what an alpine izakaya should be — sashimi delivered same-day from the Sea of Japan ports (Niigata and Toyama, both two hours by truck), Shinshu beef yakiniku grilled at the table, basashi with the house ginger-and-garlic sauce, a deep yamame trout course, kushiyaki, soba dumplings, and a thirty-bottle Nagano sake list that ranks among the best curated in the prefecture. A standard meal runs ¥6,500-9,000 per person with sake.
The room seats forty across two floors. The downstairs has a counter facing the open kitchen; the upstairs is divided into half-private booths with hori-gotatsu seating (tables sunk into the floor with leg wells beneath, so it reads as tatami without the discomfort). A small stone-walled wine cellar at the back doubles as a private dining room for groups up to eight.
Reservations are taken a week ahead and matter for the upstairs booths; the downstairs counter takes walk-ins outside weekend peaks. English menus are present but image-heavy rather than detailed; the staff speak basic English and will recommend sake based on what you've ordered. It's the most-photographed dining room in Matsumoto for a reason — the storehouse architecture is unusually beautiful and the food is genuinely good rather than just touristically interesting.
Best Occasion Fit
A first date in Matsumoto: the storehouse setting, the half-private booths, and the slow-paced izakaya format do the work without trying too hard. For birthdays, the back wine-cellar room can be booked privately for six to eight guests. Team dinners distribute well across the upstairs booth-and-table layout.
