About Pri Treh Ribnikih
Pri Treh Ribnikih — At the Three Ponds — sits on the eastern edge of the Pohorje park, in a 1950s villa overlooking three small ponds and the forested hillside that climbs toward the Pohorje massif. The restaurant has been operating in this space since 1956 and is widely regarded as Maribor's most loved traditional Štajerska dining room. The terrace, in summer, is among the most romantic outdoor dining settings in the country.
The cooking is unapologetically Štajerska. Pumpkin-seed-oil-dressed beef carpaccio; Pohorje venison goulash with bread dumplings; pike-perch from the Drava with caraway butter; Štajerska pork roast with sauerkraut and dumplings; a Prekmurska gibanica layered cake the kitchen has been refining for decades. Portions are Slovenian-generous, the bread is house-baked, and the kitchen does not chase fashion.
The wine list runs about 280 references with a strong representation of Slovenian Štajerska — Šipon, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, the Štajerska indigenous Žametovka — and a smaller Croatian Istrian and Friulian section. By-the-glass rotates ten bottles; mark-ups are fair, and the sommelier is happy to walk groups through the regional list at the table.
Service is led by the long-tenured staff and runs at the unhurried Štajerska pace. The room — interior dining hall in winter, lakeside terrace in summer — handles long family lunches and small celebration dinners with equal grace. It is the most reliably enjoyable serious dinner in Maribor for a guest who wants the Štajerska tradition without the Michelin formality.
Why It's Perfect for First Date
Pri Treh Ribnikih is a first-date dinner in the Štajerska register. The lakeside summer terrace handles the ambient work; the forested park setting gives the evening a sense of removal from the city; the menu is recognisable enough that no guest is alienated; and the slower Slovenian service pace gives a conversation room to breathe. The walk afterwards through the Pohorje park is one of the most romantic short evenings in Slovenian Styria.
