Nineteen floors up, the whole city laid at your feet — Manchester's most spectacular dining room earns its address as much through the kitchen as the view, serving seasonal British menus that justify the altitude.

Manchester at Your Feet

The lift at No. 1 Spinningfields rises nineteen floors and opens into one of the most cinematic dining rooms in England. Twenty Stories occupies the building's upper levels with a full-floor restaurant, an outdoor terrace enclosed by botanical plantings, and a bar that functions as the city's finest evening ritual before or after any event in Spinningfields. On a clear evening — and Manchester has more of those than its reputation suggests — the view extends across the Pennines to the east and the Irish Sea to the west.

The kitchen takes its provenance commitment seriously: ingredients are sourced within 50 miles of Manchester, which in practice means Lancashire dairy, Cheshire vegetables, Morecambe Bay seafood, and Peak District game. The a la carte offers seared pigeon, pan-roasted turbot, and sustainable steaks alongside vegetarian dishes that reflect the same seasonal rigour. The fixed-price dinner menu runs at £72 per person; lunch menus begin at £18.50, making 20 Stories one of the few rooms at this altitude accessible across a range of budgets and occasions.

The rooftop terrace is the room's defining feature in fair weather — a retractable glass enclosure means it operates year-round, but on warm evenings with the panels open and the sky above, it becomes the city's most sought-after outdoor table. The botanical decor — living plant walls, organic materials — gives the interior a warmth that pure glass-and-steel sky restaurants often lack.

Reservations are available two to three months in advance. Weekend evenings and the Friday dinner service fill weeks ahead in summer; weekday lunch slots are more readily available. The bar accepts walk-ins and is an excellent alternative if the restaurant is full.

Best Occasion: Birthday

Few rooms deliver the same sense of occasion as 20 Stories for a birthday dinner. The height transforms a meal into an event: arriving by lift, emerging into the city view, and being seated above the skyline communicates something to the guest of honour that no ground-floor restaurant can replicate. The kitchen's reliability at this price point means the food keeps pace with the setting, and the wine list is broad enough to find something genuinely celebratory.

For a proposal, request the window table at dusk — the Spinningfields towers glowing as Manchester settles into evening is one of the more arresting backdrops in the North. The team are experienced in special occasions and handle the choreography with discretion and warmth.

Rachel T.
Occasion: Birthday

"My husband organised this for my fortieth and the whole evening was perfect. The table by the window, the food, the way the staff handled the celebration — every detail considered. The view at dusk was genuinely breathtaking."

Ben K.
Occasion: Close a Deal

"Brought two clients here who flew in from Amsterdam. The view immediately set the tone — Manchester at its most impressive. The food is genuinely good, not just a view restaurant trying to be more than the altitude."
