The Verdict
Sala Thai opened in 2003 in central Henveiru and has held its position as Male's longest-running Thai restaurant across more than twenty years of operation. The dining room runs across two ground-floor rooms inside a converted residential building, with 70 covers and a small open-air courtyard at the back. The kitchen is led by a Thai executive chef who has been with the restaurant since opening night.
The cooking is Bangkok-grade Thai. Tom yum goong (made with the local reef prawns), phad kaprao (with a fried egg as standard), the massaman beef curry, and the green papaya salad are the four reference dishes — and the kitchen will adjust spice up to a Thai register on request. The mango sticky rice (in season, March–June) is the dessert program. The room is BYO-friendly for diners returning from the airport-island liquor stores.
Pricing runs USD 22–38 per person. The room peaks at 8pm; the back courtyard is the quieter option for a dinner that needs to scale to 10 or more covers. Service is in English and Thai.
Why It Works for Team Dinner
Team dinners work at Sala Thai because the room scales: the back courtyard takes parties of 12 without trouble, the menu's family-style format (Thai dining defaults to shared plates) takes the seating-chart pressure off, and the kitchen's twenty-year operational track record means a team can book in confidence that the meal will run cleanly.
