The Verdict
Champa Central is one of central Male's best-positioned hotels and The Roof, the rooftop restaurant on the 11th floor, holds the highest dining elevation in the city. The dining room runs across an open-air rooftop deck and a covered indoor section, with 100 covers total and an unobstructed view across Male's northern harbour, the Hulhulé airport-island, and the seaplane runway that operates between Male and the resort islands.
The cooking is broad-spectrum international-Maldivian, the menu spans Maldivian classics (mas huni, the short-eats platter, the fihunu mas grills), an Indian tandoor program (the kitchen has a single dedicated tandoor on the rooftop), a small Italian section, and a serious cocktail-mocktail program (Male is dry but the bartending is unusually serious for a non-alcoholic city). The whole grilled reef fish (priced by weight, USD 35 to 55) is the kitchen's signature plate.
Pricing runs USD 28 to 48 per person. The room peaks at 7:30pm for the sunset (the western edge of the rooftop catches the sun-down between 6:30 and 7:00pm); the seaplane-watching window (5:30 to 6:30pm and 16:00 to 17:00) is its own attraction.
Why It Works for Birthday
Birthdays work at The Roof because the setting does the work: 11 floors up, an unobstructed harbour view, the seaplane traffic giving the meal something to look at between courses, and a kitchen that will quietly co-ordinate a candle-and-dessert moment without theatrics. The room is the most-photographed dining location in the city.
Signature Dishes
Harbour-view tasting platter; whole grilled reef fish; the Maldivian short-eats sampler; the gulab jamun ice cream.
