The Verdict

Au Coin des Bons Enfants has fed Maastricht since 1875 and took its first Michelin star in 1957 — the oldest gastronomic address in the city. After a quiet stretch, chef Timo Reichelt and sommelier Lino de Vrede took the reins in 2020 and won the star back in April 2023. They cook with respect for the house's classic register, not against it.

The Kitchen

Reichelt puts the produce first and the sauce-work front and centre — this is a kitchen built on stocks and reductions. Expect pan-seared North Sea turbot under a beurre blanc lifted by icewine, with a little Livar pork; or yearling venison cooked to medium-rare beneath a sauce grand veneur with redcurrants. The cooking leans France with a Dutch accent. The five-course menu runs €118, and the house is a member of Les Jeunes Restaurateurs.

The Room

The setting is country-romantic: a small, low-lit dining room in the historic Jekerkwartier with a secluded terrace tucked behind for warm evenings. It seats few, which is the point; service from de Vrede's floor is attentive without hovering. Lunch is Friday and Sunday only; dinner Thursday through Monday.

Best for Proposal

The room is small, low and quiet, the terrace private when the weather allows, and the cooking old-school enough to feel like an occasion. Book the terrace in summer or a corner table in winter, let the five-course menu set the pace, and the evening builds to its moment on its own.

Signature Dishes

Pan-seared North Sea turbot with icewine beurre blanc; yearling venison with sauce grand veneur and redcurrants.

Not For

Not for a large group or a fast lunch — this is a tiny, classical room with limited sittings, closed midweek, and best given a full evening.
