The Verdict
Mr. Octopus opened in 2017 at the north end of Bikini Beach as a sand-floor seafood BBQ — the Maafushi format that has become synonymous with the island's evening dining. The setup is unchanged: a fresh-fish display table at the entrance (you choose your fish, weighed in front of you, priced per 100g), a wood-charcoal grill behind the bar, and 60 covers across the sand under string lights and palm canopies.
The protein program is built around the day's catch from the Maafushi reef fishermen — red snapper, grouper, jobfish, mahi-mahi, octopus, and reef squid. Each is grilled with the kitchen's house lime-and-chili marinade and served with a green-papaya slaw, basmati rice, and a coconut sambol. The Mediterranean seafood platter (USD 35 per person, minimum two) is the kitchen's family-style centrepiece — grilled fish, prawns, calamari, octopus, and a mussel pot. The dessert program is small but the tropical-fruit pavlova is consistent.
Pricing runs USD 18–32 per person depending on fish selection. The room peaks at 7:30pm; the sunset window (6–6:30pm) is busiest at the front-row beach tables. The location is walking-distance from any guesthouse on Maafushi.
Why It Works for Birthday
Birthdays work at Mr. Octopus because the format is structurally celebratory: choosing the fish at the display table is its own opening ritual, the sand-floor and string-light setup is the most-photographed dinner setting on Maafushi, and the kitchen will quietly arrange a candle-and-fruit-plate moment if you mention it when booking. The price register lets a group of eight celebrate without anyone feeling overcommitted.
