Lahore Kebab House

Whitechapel's half-century Pakistani canteen, charred lamb chops and deep nihari, no tablecloth. Bring your own wine and go hungry with a crowd.

The Verdict

There is no wine list, no tablecloth, and most weekends a queue out the door. Lahore Kebab House has run from Umberston Street in Whitechapel since the 1970s, a family-owned Pakistani canteen now overseen by owner Mohammed Emran Siddique. The draw is unchanged: charred lamb chops off the grill, slow-cooked nihari, karahi gosht cooked hard and fast, and naan straight from the tandoor, served fast, halal, and bring-your-own-bottle.

Time Out gave it five stars and a Recommended badge in 2018, calling it a place of pilgrimage for curry lovers. The lamb chops run about £12, the Lahori nihari £13.50, and most curries £12, which keeps a full table well under £30 a head.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is a family brigade rather than a named chef's project: an open line of cooks working the tandoor and the grill, overseen by owner Mohammed Emran Siddique (the business is registered as Lahore Kebab House Limited). The signatures are the grilled lamb chops, the seekh kebabs, the Lahori special nihari, and the dry lamb curry that Time Out singled out.

The Room

Lahore Kebab House sits at 2-10 Umberston Street, a backstreet off Commercial Road in Whitechapel, a short walk from Aldgate East and Whitechapel stations. The room is plain and busy: long tables, screens showing cricket, a tandoor you can watch. It is halal and unlicensed, so bring your own wine or beer.

Best for a Team Dinner

For a team dinner or a hungry group, the format is hard to beat: big sharing dishes, fast service, a BYOB policy that keeps the bill down, and food that lands well under £30 a head. Order a mix of lamb chops, nihari, karahi and naan for the table and let everyone dig in.

Not For

Not for a quiet date or a card-only purist. It is loud, communal and cash-friendly, there is no alcohol licence, and weekend queues at peak times are routine.

Reservations

Lahore Kebab House built its name on walk-ins, and queues still form at weekends, but the restaurant now also takes bookings through its website. It is open daily until late. Bring cash or check card acceptance before you go, and remember it is BYOB, with no bar but no corkage fuss either.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lahore Kebab House worth it?

Lahore Kebab House is worth it for some of London's best-value Pakistani grilling, not for comfort or polish. Time Out's 2018 five-star review called it a place of pilgrimage, and the lamb chops and nihari back that up. Expect a plain, noisy room, possible queues, and a bill that rarely tops £30 a head.

What should I order at Lahore Kebab House?

Order the grilled lamb chops first, the single most-cited dish, then the Lahori special nihari and a karahi gosht or chicken to share. Add seekh kebabs to start, a dry lamb curry, daal tarka and fresh tandoor naan. Most mains sit around £12, so a generous spread stays affordable.

Does Lahore Kebab House take reservations?

Lahore Kebab House is primarily a walk-in restaurant and weekend queues are common, but it now accepts bookings through its official website. For a large group or a weekend evening, booking ahead is the safer move. It is open every day until late; midweek you can usually walk straight in.

Is Lahore Kebab House halal and does it serve alcohol?

Lahore Kebab House is fully halal and unlicensed, so it does not serve alcohol, but it operates a bring-your-own-bottle policy, which is part of its appeal for groups. Bring wine or beer and expect no corkage hassle. For more East London options, see our London dining guide.
