The Experience
Lumbung is the Indonesian-cuisine flagship of The Oberoi Beach Resort Lombok — the Aman-adjacent luxury resort that occupies a stretch of Medana Beach on Lombok's northwest coast — and is the single most consistently praised restaurant in the island's dining canon. The pavilion is named for the lumbung, the traditional rice barn of Sasak architecture whose thatched-roof elevated-wood-platform form is the signature shape of Lombok's village skyline; the restaurant's architecture reproduces this form at full scale, with a soaring thatched roof, open sides facing the Lombok Strait, and a dining platform elevated above the beach sand. The setting alone would justify the trip.
The menu is an Indonesian tasting-menu programme that covers a different regional chapter each night of the week. Monday is Sasak (Lombok's own cuisine — ayam taliwang, plecing kangkung, sate bulayak — treated with fine-dining presentation). Tuesday is Balinese, Wednesday Javanese, Thursday Sumatran, Friday a chef's-choice tasting, Saturday Sasak-seafood, Sunday a pan-Indonesian greatest-hits. The five-course tasting menu (IDR 1.5M per person without wine, IDR 2.5M with pairing) is the standard order; à la carte is available.
The wine programme is the deepest on the island — roughly 200 bins, strong on New World with a serious Australian and New Zealand chapter, and a small but well-chosen Indonesian-wine short list (Hatten, Plaga). The cocktail programme extends the Indonesian theme with tuak-based and arak-based cocktails that are more accessible than Bali's equivalent programmes. Service is Oberoi-standard: one server per table, the pace set to the guest rather than the kitchen, and the full resort-hotel hospitality extended to dinner.
Reservations are essential — the pavilion seats 40 across the main platform and four private cabañas that are effectively always booked two weeks ahead. Bookings are handled by the resort concierge. The IDR 1.2M–2.5M range covers the tasting menu without wine; adding pairing or dining in a private cabaña raises the check. The restaurant is a 45-minute drive from the airport and 90 minutes from Senggigi; the resort arranges all transfers.
Why it's perfect for Proposal
For a proposal in Lombok, the private cabaña at Lumbung — booked for the 18:15 seating, with the sunset over the Lombok Strait providing the visual anchor — is the single most theatrical setting the island offers. For impressing a client or celebrating a birthday, the main pavilion tables deliver almost the same experience at a slightly lower price point.
