Amatera

The Senggigi beach-cliff restaurant — contemporary pan-Asian plates, a long list of Bali and Lombok craft spirits, and a terrace positioned directly over the bay that makes this the sunset dining choice for travellers not staying at Oberoi.

The Experience

Amatera is the cliff-terrace restaurant at the southern end of Senggigi beach — Lombok's main beach-town dining strip — and is, for diners not staying at The Oberoi, the best sunset dining experience on the island. The terrace is built on a rocky outcrop extending into the bay, with the main dining platform positioned directly over the water, torches placed along the cliff edge, and the 18:15 sunset reliably filling the frame. The interior dining room (used mostly in the monsoon season, November–March) is a more intimate space with a central bar and counter seating; the terrace is the main event.

The menu is contemporary pan-Asian rather than strictly Indonesian — a recognition that Amatera's customer base is predominantly international travellers rather than resident expats or locals. Seafood dominates: the daily catch from the Senggigi fishing fleet is listed at the bar entrance and can be ordered grilled, steamed in a banana leaf, or pan-seared. The non-seafood chapter covers a Thai laab, a Vietnamese pho, a Japanese-style tuna tataki, and a Sasak ayam taliwang for diners who want the local dish. The dessert programme features a coconut-and-lime pavlova that is the signature and consistently good.

The drinks programme is the surprise strength — a long list of Bali and Lombok craft spirits (arak, tuak, local-distillation gin) used in well-constructed cocktails, plus a wine list that is shorter than The Oberoi's but better than most of Senggigi's. Beer is predominantly Bintang with three or four imported options. The bar itself, which runs along the back of the interior dining room, is a legitimate pre-dinner destination in its own right and accepts walk-ins from 17:00.

Reservations are essential for sunset seatings (17:30 and 18:00) and strongly recommended for dinner generally in high season (July–August, December). Bookings through the website, WhatsApp, or TheFork. The IDR 500K–1M per person range covers a full dinner without wine. Cash, credit card, and Indonesian e-wallet (GoPay, OVO) all accepted. The restaurant is a 15-minute walk from the Sheraton Senggigi and a 20-minute taxi from Mangsit; parking is available.

Why it's perfect for First Date

For a first date in Lombok — particularly a first date involving travellers who are staying at one of the Senggigi hotels rather than the farther-out luxury resorts — Amatera is the correct and easy choice. The sunset does the heavy atmospheric work; the menu's pan-Asian breadth accommodates most preferences; the pace is relaxed. For a proposal that is less production-heavy than Lumbung but still deeply romantic, a cliff-edge table booked for 17:45 is a strong second choice.

A note on context
