Kumbali Country Lodge sits on a 250-acre organic farm thirty minutes from Lilongwe's city centre — far enough to feel like escape, close enough to be practical. The open-air dining pavilion overlooks a dam and indigenous woodland where birds call continuously from the acacia trees.
The kitchen operates on a farm-to-table principle that is literal rather than aspirational: vegetables, herbs, and fruit come from the estate's own production, supplemented by chambo from Lake Malawi and beef from local cattle farmers. The menu changes with the season and the harvest.
The Sunday lunch is a Lilongwe institution — families and couples drive out from the city for a long, unhurried meal that extends naturally into the afternoon. The three-course menu includes a soup from the garden, a main from the farm, and a dessert that invariably features fruits currently in season on the estate.
Kumbali also produces its own honey, jams, and preserves, which appear throughout the meal and are sold in the farm shop. The setting — African bush soundtrack, open sky, farm animals visible from the terrace — creates a restorative experience difficult to replicate in any urban restaurant.
