About Le Zie
Trattoria Le Zie — literally 'the aunts' trattoria' — is the family-run Salentine institution on Via Costadura, three streets from Piazza Sant'Oronzo, and is the village's most authentic grandmother-style dining room. The 'aunts' (Carmela and Maria) have run the kitchen since 1989 and the menu has not changed materially in over thirty years. The space is a converted Salentine townhouse with stone-vaulted ceilings, hand-carved chestnut beams, and twenty-eight covers across two rooms.
The menu is unrepentantly Salentine grandmother-style. Hand-rolled orecchiette with cime di rapa or with horse-meat ragu; ciceri e tria; pezzetti di cavallo (Pugliese horse braise); polpette al sugo (slow-cooked meatballs in tomato); cavatelli with Salentine octopus and red wine; the famous 'rustico leccese' — a baked puff-pastry filled with mozzarella, tomato and béchamel that is the canonical Salentine afternoon snack served as a primo here.
The wine list is short and entirely Salentine — Negroamaro, Primitivo, Salice Salentino rosato — at the most reasonable village prices. Glass pours start at €3.50. The cellar holds about 80 references and is the most reasonable wine programme in any Lecce dining room.
Service is genuinely 'le zie' — the aunts run the floor, the captains are family or longtime employees, and the kitchen pacing accommodates the Salentine dinner format. Le Zie is the dining room that local Lecce families, university students, and serious-budget travellers all use as a default lunch and dinner address. The room runs at moderate volume on a Saturday night.
Why It's Perfect for First Date
Le Zie is the easy-first-date room in Lecce when both diners want Salentine atmosphere without precious tasting-menu format. The 'aunts' kitchen is the conversation; the most reasonable wine list in the village makes a half-bottle pairing accessible; the room's volume is celebratory rather than precious. Book the corner two-top in the smaller dining room.
