About Andaaz
Andaaz operates on a parallel rooftop to Cuckoo's Den, on the same Fort Road in the Walled City, with a similarly framed view of the Badshahi Mosque. The two restaurants have been compared and pitted against each other for fifteen years; locals and serious diners increasingly send guests to Andaaz for the slightly tighter kitchen and the slightly less aggressive tour-bus volume on a busy weekend.
The menu reads as classical Pakistani-Mughlai, executed with a hotel-restaurant level of consistency that the more bohemian Cuckoo's does not always reach. Mutton karahi cooked to order with whole chillies. Seekh kebabs ground in-house and skewered onto charcoal, the smoke timed to arrive at the table with the meat. Dum biryani sealed and cooked in a clay pot. A particular speciality is the fish fry, marinated in mustard oil and gram flour and fried in a shallow pan, which Lahore considers a winter season classic.
The interior of the building, like Cuckoo's, holds Mughal-era and colonial-era art and photography. The rooftop has multiple levels — the highest gives the cleanest mosque view but is slightly more exposed in winter; the middle level is sheltered and is the locals' choice. The staff understand the rhythm of a slow Lahori dinner — multiple courses, lengthy gaps between them, late finishing time — and pace the table accordingly.
For impressing a visiting client, Andaaz is increasingly the more credible recommendation. The kitchen runs at a higher consistency, the room is slightly more formal, and the service registers as polished rather than improvised. The view does the rest of the work.
Best Occasion Fit
For impressing clients in Lahore, Andaaz combines the Walled City view with a kitchen that delivers consistently — the combination foreign visitors talk about for the rest of their trip.
