About Café Aylanto
Café Aylanto opened in Karachi in 2003 and brought a polished Italian-Mediterranean dining register to Pakistan that the country had not previously had. The Lahore branch on MM Alam Road — Lahore's most fashionable dining street — opened later and has become the city's standard for international fine dining and the room a Lahori takes a date that needs to read as cosmopolitan.
The dining room is a converted bungalow with a large outdoor courtyard built around a central fountain. Indoor seating is in two formal dining rooms with white linen and dark wood; outdoor seating in winter (October to March, when Lahore's evenings are cool and clear) is the requested option and books out first. Lighting is warm and low; conversation carries.
The menu runs Mediterranean rather than strictly Italian — pasta from a fresh-pasta kitchen, wood-fired pizza, grilled seafood (fish flown in from Karachi or Dubai), Greek-influenced mezze and salads, a small steak section. The tiramisu is regularly mentioned as the best in Pakistan. Mocktails and fresh juices stand in for wine; the kitchen does not offer alcohol.
Café Aylanto's role in Lahore's dining scene is closer to a hotel-flagship restaurant than to a destination chef-driven room — competent, polished, ideal for a date or a small business dinner where the conversation matters more than the cooking. Pakistanis who have eaten extensively abroad return to Aylanto and find it does not embarrass.
