About Lumberyard

Lumberyard occupies the historic Lumberyard building on Forest Avenue in downtown Laguna Beach — a few steps from the boardwalk and the cove. It is the kind of broad, dependable New American room a beach town needs: something for everyone, done properly.

The kitchen is run by longtime executive chef Armando Ortega, formerly of the local favourite Oysters, and the menu lands squarely in our dining guide as a casual all-rounder rather than a special-occasion blowout.

The Kitchen

The cooking is American comfort food taken seriously: rotisserie chicken, steaks, ribs and Pacific seafood, alongside down-home plates like meatloaf, chicken pot pie and a proper Cobb salad. Lunch leans into dip sandwiches, burgers and meal-size salads, and the kitchen runs a busy happy hour.

None of it is cheffy in a tasting-menu sense — the point is generous, well-executed plates that suit a long lunch off the beach.

The Room

The two-level room is casual but contemporary, set inside the timber-framed Lumberyard building that gives the place its name. A street-side patio does brisk people-watching on Forest Avenue, and live music plays on weekends.

It is loud and lively at peak times — a downtown gathering spot more than a quiet retreat.

Best for a casual lunch or easy dinner

Lumberyard suits a relaxed working lunch, an unfussy first date on the patio, or a casual group dinner. For a smarter Laguna meal, compare Broadway by Amar Santana or the ocean-view Cliff.

Not for

Not for a formal celebration or a fine-dining night — it is a busy, casual downtown room that can get loud, with comfort cooking rather than ambitious tasting plates.
