About George's at the Cove

George's at the Cove has sat at the top of Prospect Street in La Jolla since 1984, overlooking the cove and the Pacific from three levels. The downstairs dining room, George's California Modern, is the serious one, where executive chef and partner Trey Foshee cooks seasonal California food built on San Diego produce and local seafood. Foshee calls it San Diego on a plate, and after four decades the restaurant remains the village's defining table, as much for the view as for the kitchen.

The Kitchen

Trey Foshee is the chef and partner who has defined George's California Modern, a James Beard-recognised cook whose food leans hard on local sourcing. The signature is the fish tacos, yellowfin tuna with fried avocado and crushed corn nuts, a dish that has stayed on the menu through every seasonal rewrite because regulars will not let it go. Around it the menu changes constantly with the California seasons, running through local seafood, market vegetables and coastal produce.

The cooking is precise without being fussy, the kind of California food that lets a good ingredient lead. The dated proof: George's marked its 40th anniversary in 2024, opening in 1984 and still run at a level that keeps it on every San Diego best list. The Room

California Modern is the downstairs room, white-clothed and quiet, with windows and a back wall that open onto the cove and the Pacific. Lighting is soft, sound is easy, and tables are spaced for conversation rather than turnover. The dress is smart-casual, the mood relaxed-coastal rather than formal. Upstairs, the open-air Ocean Terrace is the louder, more casual option with the bigger view. For a dinner that needs to impress or charm, the downstairs room is the one to book.

Best for First Date

Book George's California Modern for a first date because the view does half the work and the room does the rest: soft light, well-spaced tables, the Pacific out the window, and a kitchen that sends out food worth talking about. Take a window table at sunset, order the tuna tacos to share and let the seasonal menu lead from there. It is romantic without being stiff, which is exactly the register a first date wants.

Not for

Not for a budget dinner. California Modern mains sit in the 40-to-60-dollar range; the rooftop Ocean Terrace upstairs is the cheaper, more casual call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is George's at the Cove worth it?

Yes, for the combination of view and kitchen. Trey Foshee's California Modern has overlooked La Jolla Cove since 1984 and still cooks at a level that keeps it on San Diego's best lists, with the yellowfin tuna tacos as its signature. Dinner mains run in the 40-to-60-dollar range, which is fair for the cooking and the setting, and the window tables at sunset are worth the booking on their own.

How hard is it to book George's at the Cove?

Plan a week or two ahead for a downstairs California Modern window table, especially at sunset and on weekends. Reserve through the restaurant's site or OpenTable. The upstairs Ocean Terrace is more walk-in friendly if the dining room is full. Ask specifically for a window or ocean-facing table when you book if the view is the point.

What is the dress code at George's at the Cove?

Smart-casual. California Modern downstairs is the dressier of the rooms, but San Diego runs relaxed and there is no jacket rule. A collared shirt or a nice top fits the room; the upstairs terrace is more casual still. Aim for the level you would bring to a good coastal dinner.

What should I order at George's at the Cove?

Order the fish tacos, the yellowfin tuna with fried avocado and crushed corn nuts that is the restaurant's signature, then let the seasonal California menu lead for the mains, which lean on local seafood and market produce. Ask the server what came in that day; the kitchen builds the menu around what is fresh.

Diner Reviews

Occasion: First Date

Booked a window table downstairs at sunset for a first date and it was perfect. The tuna tacos are as good as everyone says, and the room is quiet enough to actually talk while the cove glows out the window. Service was warm without hovering. Hard to beat for a date in La Jolla.

Brian H.November 2025
Occasion: Birthday

Did a birthday dinner in California Modern and the seasonal menu was excellent across the board. The view is the headline but the cooking holds its own. A touch pricey, but for a milestone dinner over the Pacific it was exactly right.
