About Roan Kikunoi
Roan Kikunoi is the Pontocho-side intimate counterpart to chef Yoshihiro Murata's three-star Kikunoi-Honten. The Roan dining room runs a fourteen-seat counter and four private tatami rooms above a narrow Pontocho lane; in summer, a kawayuka river-balcony seating extends the dining floor over the Kamogawa.
Chef Murata (a fifth-generation kaiseki master and one of the most internationally celebrated Japanese chefs of his generation) supervises both kitchens; the Roan menu is slightly more contemporary, with a willingness to incorporate French and modernist technique. The seasonal kaiseki runs twelve courses over two hours — Wakasa Bay sashimi, a Kamogawa-river-themed hassun, a charcoal-grilled course, a chrysanthemum-flower vinegared course in autumn, and an aged-rice dessert that closes with restraint.
The summer river-balcony seating is the most romantic dining experience in Kyoto, full stop. Guests dine cross-legged on raised wooden platforms over the Kamogawa with the river running ten feet below; the seating is available May through September, books out three months ahead, and produces some of the most-photographed dinners in Japan. The riverside is where engagement nights happen.
Bookings two months ahead via Kyoto hotel concierge or directly through the Kikunoi website. Summer riverside seating books at the season opening (typically late April). Dress smart; the kawayuka platform requires comfortable seating posture. Lunch is a more accessible introduction at roughly two-thirds the dinner price.
