Kogel Mogel

Kogel Mogel sits in a slim 19th-century townhouse on Sienna Street, one block off the south-east corner of the Main Square. The dining room is intimate and warm: timber floors, candle sconces, white-and-cream walls hung with vintage Polish photographs, an open kitchen at the back, and forty covers across two cosy floors with a small interior courtyard for summer service.

The cooking is modern Polish at its most personal. A signature beef tartare with smoked-egg yolk, capers and pickled cucumber. Slow-cooked Polish goose leg with red cabbage, apple and Polish-honey jus. House-made pierogi filled with venison, served on a forest-mushroom velouté. The desserts are the room's particular pride — a still-famous sour-cherry kogel mogel (the family-name dessert: a whipped egg-and-sugar cream the room has reinvented as a fine-dining course), and a chocolate-and-Tokaji parfait.

The wine list is short, sharp and well-judged — almost entirely small-producer European with a deliberate Polish, Austrian and Georgian bias, and a useful by-the-glass programme so two guests can drink properly across four courses. The cocktail list runs a proper old-fashioned, a smoked-honey negroni, and a serious modern interpretation of the żubrówka apple cocktail.

Dinner with wine lands around 300 PLN per guest. Kogel Mogel is the room every Krakow chef recommends on a day off — and the obvious first-date room in the Old Town.

Kogel Mogel is the first-date room in Krakow that does all the right things. The intimate townhouse setting is conversation-friendly without being too formal; the cooking is genuinely contemporary Polish, which gives a date proper conversation material; the cocktail list is interesting enough to ease into the evening; and the staff are skilled at the discreet pacing that lets a date breathe. Ask for one of the upstairs window tables onto Sienna.
