The Grotto at Rayavadee

The Grotto is the fine-dining restaurant of Rayavadee, the isolated luxury resort on the Railay peninsula accessible only by boat from Ao Nang. The restaurant is built inside a natural limestone cave on Phra Nang Beach — thirty tables set in the cave's amphitheatre, candles on every table, the Andaman Sea breaking fifteen metres away, and limestone karst walls curving over the dining room like a cathedral.

The menu runs a Thai-and-seafood set. Tiger prawns from the resort's own dive operation, a grilled snapper, a crab curry, a tom yum with coconut, and a desserts section that features a mango sticky rice done correctly. The cooking is strong but not technically groundbreaking — this is a restaurant where the setting does more work than the kitchen, and the kitchen is sensible enough not to compete.

Sunset is the reservation. The cave opens west onto the beach, which means the last hour of daylight fills the interior with amber-peach light reflecting off the limestone walls. It is the most photographed dining room in Thailand. After sundown the candles take over and the effect becomes Gothic-cathedral.

Booking is the challenge. The Grotto holds thirty tables per night; Rayavadee's own guests have priority; outside diners need a speedboat reservation to Railay (included when you book). Plan a month ahead in high season. For a proposal, the resort's team will coordinate the speedboat, a private table toward the back of the cave, champagne, flowers, and an after-dinner walk to the Phra Nang Shrine — the proposal is handled as a full production.
