Welcome Seafood Restaurant occupies an entire shop-lot block in Asia City — perhaps two hundred tables spread across an indoor dining hall, a partially-covered courtyard, and outdoor pavement seating. It is the largest, loudest, and most universally-recommended seafood restaurant in Kota Kinabalu, and the default group-dinner venue for everyone from travelling families to corporate delegations.
The operation runs on live tanks. Diners walk past the entrance where the day's catch is displayed — tiger prawns, mud crabs, lobsters, sea bass, groupers, mantis shrimp, a rotating set of local fish — and order by the kilo with a preparation (steamed, butter-cream, salt-crust, deep-fried, chilli-sweet-sour, black pepper). The cream tiger prawns — the restaurant's signature — are the dish every first-time visitor orders.
The menu beyond the tanks is vast — claypot rice, Hakka stir-fries, Sabah vegetables, noodles, a rotating set of specials chalked on boards around the dining hall. Beers are cold and fast; wine is possible but unusual. Service is efficient rather than courteous; the tables turn quickly.
For a team dinner, Welcome Seafood is the correct Kota Kinabalu answer. Order family-style, share platters, run through four or five dishes across the table, and close with fried rice. Budget MYR 120–150 per person unless ordering lobster. The bill will arrive before anyone finishes the last beer.
