About Hogfish Bar & Grill
Key West's tourist district serves very good food, but the best meal you'll have in the Florida Keys area is one bridge east of Duval Street, at the edge of Safe Harbor Marina on Stock Island. Hogfish Bar & Grill at 6810 Front Street occupies a stretch of working waterfront where the romance is not manufactured or designed — it's the consequence of a place that exists because fishermen need somewhere to eat and drink after a day on the water. The shrimp boats still roll in. The marina still smells of salt and diesel. The chickee hut that serves as the main dining structure sits directly over the water, and the fish you're eating may have been in the Gulf earlier that morning.
Hogfish is not a pretentious place. The long picnic tables, the no-reservations policy for most parties, the t-shirt-and-flip-flops dress code — these are features, not concessions. They're what happens when a restaurant's identity is built on the quality of the seafood rather than the quality of the décor. The Infatuation has reviewed Hogfish, food media has written about it extensively, and when Jimmy Buffett was in Key West in February 2023, this is where he chose to have dinner. That tells you something about what kind of place it is and who understands it.
The signature dish is the Killer: fresh hogfish fillet, Swiss cheese, and mushrooms on a soft Cuban bread roll. Hogfish is a species of wrasse found in the Atlantic and the Gulf that is difficult to find outside of its native waters — a firm, clean-tasting white fish with a sweetness that recalls lobster more than the typical mild white fish. The Killer is the most direct possible expression of what this restaurant is about. Order it. Also order the Key West pink shrimp, which are sweeter and more delicate than their larger cousins and are served here simply, with the clarity of seafood that doesn't need embellishment.
The grouper reuben, the shrimp corn dogs, the stone crab claws in season — the menu extends well beyond the Killer, and most of it is excellent. The kitchen has the confidence that comes from working with fish that arrives as fresh as any in the world. The cocktail list leans into the Keys tradition of rum and fruit with enough skill to avoid cliche. The beer selection is cold and well-chosen for the environment.
Hogfish is, by any honest measure, one of the most authentic dining experiences available in the Florida Keys. If you eat only at restaurants on the main tourist drag, you will leave Key West having eaten well but having missed what the island actually tastes like. This is what the island actually tastes like.
Best Occasion: Team Dinner
The long communal tables, the informal atmosphere, and the sharing-friendly seafood format make Hogfish a natural choice for groups who want to eat very well without the formality of a private dining room. The no-reservation format for smaller groups means you can adjust headcount easily. And a team that has eaten hogfish sandwiches at a marina bar together has genuinely shared something — which is what team dinners are actually for.
