Ukai-Tei arrived in Kaohsiung from Tokyo with its full teppanyaki format intact — dark-timber counters, brass accents, and a chef-per-four-guests ratio. The room is big enough to absorb a group of six or eight comfortably, and the format is pure theatre: A5 Kuroge wagyu seared in front of you, hassun courses plated to your individual seat, a rice-and-soup closer that the chef announces with a small bow.
The set menus start at NT$4,500 and run to NT$7,000, with the top menu adding uni, abalone, and premium wagyu cuts. Sake and wine are both well-curated; the sommelier has specific opinions and is worth listening to.
For a birthday, the chef and his team will quietly handle a cake at the end of the meal. Book the counter seats rather than a private room — the point of Ukai-Tei is to watch the fire.
Why it fits Birthday
Birthday belongs here because teppanyaki is a performance built for celebration. Every course arrives with a small visual moment, the chef's knife-work is a natural conversation piece, and the menu closes with the kind of ceremonial finish a birthday deserves.
