Villa Rose operates out of a 1920s colonial villa in Asgiriya, a quiet residential pocket ten minutes from the lake. The ground floor has been converted into three dining rooms and a central wine courtyard; the veranda tables — candlelit, overhung by old trees — are the seats everyone wants.
The menu is continental-leaning with a few Sri Lankan touches. A short à la carte covers steak, fish, pasta, and a modest vegetarian section; a five-course tasting menu changes weekly and usually includes a Ceylon-prawn course worth ordering for itself. The wine list is the deepest in Kandy — French, Italian, South African, and a surprisingly strong Argentine Malbec section.
The volume of the dining room is kept low. Couples can speak at conversational level without straining; the staff do not hover. It is the most reliably romantic restaurant in central Kandy without tipping into formal territory.
