Auberge du Soleil is the closest Kampot has to a grand old French restaurant — a yellow villa on the riverfront promenade, a wide veranda, and a dining room that stays full from 18:00 to 22:00 most nights of the week. The menu is French home-cooking with Cambodian ingredients, plus a rotating daily special the chef announces tableside.
Steak frites with Kampot green pepper sauce is the signature, but the duck confit, the fish soup, and the cheese plate are all worth ordering. The wine list is modest, French and South African, carefully priced. Service is warm, unhurried, and comfortable switching between French, English, and Khmer.
The veranda is the place to be. Birthday groups of six to ten book it weeks in advance. The staff know exactly how to stage a cake and a song without making the honoree want to disappear under the table.
