About Green Grass Hotel

Green Grass Hotel & Restaurant has held the reputation for years as Jaffna's go-to spot for the famous Jaffna crab curry — the spicy delicacy that put northern Sri Lankan cuisine on the country's culinary map. The restaurant is one of the city's most-cited single dining destinations and is the proper introduction to Jaffna's regional Tamil-spiced seafood tradition.

The signature is the Jaffna Crab Curry (₨2,500-4,500 by crab size) — fresh local crabs (typically blue swimmer or mud crab) cooked in the regional Jaffna spice blend (curry leaves, mustard seeds, fennel, coriander, dried red chili, fenugreek), with drumstick leaves, tamarind, and the kitchen's slow-cooked coconut-milk reduction, served whole on a single platter for sharing. The dish is genuinely spicy (the Jaffna spice blend is more aggressive than the southern Sri Lankan versions) and the eating ritual is hands-on — diners crack the crab shells at the table and use the curry sauce as the central flavor anchor.

Beyond crab curry, the kitchen serves the broader Jaffna Tamil menu: Jaffna Mango Curry (₨600), Tamil Rice-and-Curry Plate (₨900), Cuttlefish Curry (₨1,400), Prawn Curry (₨1,800), Odiyal Kool seafood broth (₨2,200, available on weekends or by advance request), and a small selection of Jaffna-style breads. A meal of crab curry, two side curries, rice, and drinks for two runs ₨5,000-8,000.

The room is functional Sri Lankan-tropical style — sixty seats across two floors with bay windows facing KKS Road, decorative palm-frond and Tamil-art touches, standard restaurant table seating. Reservations are useful for groups of six or more on weekends; walk-ins for two or four work outside dinner peaks. Cards are accepted; the staff speak Tamil and English.
