About Hamdi Restaurant

Some restaurants are institutions not because they reinvent themselves, but because they never needed to. Hamdi has been serving the kebabs of southeastern Turkey from its perch above the Egyptian Bazaar since 1979, and the terrace view over the Golden Horn — with the New Mosque, the bazaar's domes, and the ferry traffic of the Bosphorus beyond — remains one of the most viscerally Istanbul views you can have while eating.

The namesake Hamdi Usta established a reputation for serving the genuine article: Adana kebab made with hand-minced lamb and tail fat, cooked over beechwood charcoal; beyti kebab rolled in flatbread and doused in yoghurt and butter; patlıcan kebab where smoky aubergine puree acts as a bed for spiced minced meat. These are not approximations — they are the real thing, executed at volume with consistent quality that few high-traffic Istanbul restaurants manage.

The meze spread is essential: smoky ezme, creamy haydari, silky hummus, and piyaz — a white bean salad with hard-boiled egg that is a Turkish classic often overlooked by visitors. Order the sini kebab for the table — a platter built for sharing, arriving on a copper tray with enough for four.

The terrace books fast, particularly at weekends and during the summer months. Request a corner table on the upper level for the best angles on the Horn. The wine and raki list is serviceable rather than exceptional — the point here is the food and the view, both of which deliver without qualification.
